p51-55

There are 2 letters in this chapter from Attilio. What do you make of his spelling?

  1. Well - aside from feeling comforted that his grammar and spelling are not a whole lot better than mine - I found them humorous and with irony and still the underlying French politeness such as "Ecrit moi encore, mais fais un peu entention a ton ortographe! On ni comprend rien, il faut toultan deviner! Je dis pas a pour te vexer". Am a little tantalised by "chaspait" (P53 in mine - Attilio writes that his reply has been delayed by his sister's wedding to Egidio.) i might guess the meaning but what's the verb please? [found my book among my packing after all]

  2. I love the fact that French people make spelling and grammar errors (once I realised what was going on!) just like us. It's not too helpful for us learners though!
'il faut toultan deviner' ? and I like Margot I am stuck with 'chaspait' ? I still have not worked out what happened to PB. I know he died but for no cause ? Maybe just old-age.

  3. I think his body took unkindly to being pulled out a tree and whirled around and having his head thumped off the ground. What a sissy! I think too he survived long enough to get home. Is that anything like a good guess?

  4. Yes, this is what happened, though Pagnol does not make this explicit. Law of the jungle? Just desserts? Not sure which way to read the death of PB at Papet's hands. Is everyone bad so far? Or just amoral?
Anyway, chasper is a slang word for 'grope'!!
and ''il faut toultan deviner" = il faut tout le temps deviner = you have to guess all the time (a bit ironic considering his own spelling...)
