So you've got this beautiful landscape, and er, some 'colourful' locals. Do you think the author, Pagnol, wants us to like farmer Pique-Bouffique or Simenon?

5 commentaires:

  1. I think Simeon is a stranger from out of town and has a weird accent ! Also has not much compassion for the game he is trapping. The farmer is more helpful but I think the author probably wants us to prefer him to Simeon. But I have the feeling this will change !

  2. Commentaire de Margot:
"I think author expects us to prefer P-B because he seems to be a well known part of the community and he helped local workers by sharing his knowledge about how to deal with blisters. Simeon on the other hand is mocked as a stranger with a strange accent like songs in Paris and a nasty habit of stealing from other poachers' traps and, I think, of failing to finish off the trapped animals kindly. This is not the way we measure folks' worth in North Berwick! I don't know yet whether S's brains finished up in his hat or just his skullcap. Hard work but entertaining. In bits I had to look up lots of words."

well done Joyce - I've read on a little (chouchou I hear you saying) and it looks like P-B is nobody's cup of tea!
